About

The museum was first opened in 1997. It is located close to the Casa Camuzzi. Hermann Hesse lived in one of the villa’s apartments from 1919 until 1931. This is where he could enjoy the wonderful view over Lake Lugano.

Nowadays around 18 people work for the Museum. They’re mostly freelancers. Some of them collaborate regularly, others are involved in different projects.

Especially due to the hard work and commitment of director of the museum and author of the book “Mit Hermann Hesse durchs Tessin”, Regina Bucher, as well as the Hermann Hesse Foundation of Montagnola, the museum is a now sought after meeting place in Ticino, which is attracting people from all around the world. The  museum organizes an extensive program every year, offering temporary exhibits, conferences, concerts, films, walks and weekly readings in Italian and German. In recent years, a literary café was opened up close to the museum, where the visitor can find some of the author’s main works.
